History
Established in 1914, the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is one of the oldest microbiology departments in the United States. Throughout our rich history dating back to the late 19th century, we have been at the forefront of research, teaching, and innovation in the microbial sciences.
Alumni
Graduates of the Department of Bacteriology have made groundbreaking contributions to science, medicine, and public policy. From Esther Lederberg’s discovery of the lambda phage to Jo Handelsman’s leadership in microbiome research and science policy, our alumni have shaped the future of microbiology. Their work spans academia, industry, and global health, reflecting the Department’s long-standing commitment to the Wisconsin Idea: that research and education should influence people’s lives far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.
